Why Pick a Retirement Village with an Emergency Call System?

by Roberta Craig

Moving to a retirement village doesn't mean that you're ready to give up an independent and active life. You may just want to live in a community of other people around your own age and to lose some of the responsibilities of living in your current home.

When you look at retirement villages, you'll see that some offer more services than others. For example, some villages have emergency call systems built into each one of their properties. What do these systems do and why are they useful?

How Does an Emergency Call System Work?

Emergency call systems all serve the same purpose. They give you a way to contact somebody outside of your home if you need help. So, your retirement home may come with a special phone or intercom that connects you to someone who can help you on site. Or, the system may connect to an external service that handles emergency calls. Some homes have call buttons, pull-cords and speakers in various rooms rather than a phone or intercom.

When you need help, you use this system to call someone in. For example, if you were to have a fall and couldn't reach your phone, then a pull-cord system would alert someone that you have a problem. Some retirement villages take this system a step further. For example, you can arrange to have someone call you on it every day just to check that all is OK. This is handy if you're ill and would like to know that someone is checking in on you until you're back on your feet again.

Why Choose a Village With an Emergency Call System?

Choosing the right retirement community isn't just about how you feel now. You also need to plan ahead for the future. You may have no need for call system back-up at the moment, but you can't predict what will happen in the future. You could have an accident or get ill. An emergency system could be really useful then.

This may also save you money later. For example, you may find that illness, a medical condition or injury makes this kind of system essential to you in the future. If your village doesn't have a system in place, you may need to subscribe to an alert button service yourself.

So, an emergency call service is a good thing to look for when you are looking around retirement villages. You never know when this will be useful.

About Me

The Importance of Health Checks

Hello, my name is Liam and I live in Alice Springs, Australia. I work pretty hard every day out on my farm, so it isn't unusual for me to have aches and pains. I hate going to the doctor so I normally pop a couple of painkillers or open a cold beer to deal with the discomfort. However, my wife kept on nagging me to see a doctor, which I eventually did. The doctor at Fidelity Health Choice discovered that I had a rare infection which was causing the pain. After a course of drugs, I fully recovered. I now attend regular appointments. I hope you enjoy my health and wellbeing blog.
